Early life
Capaldi, Lewis Marc, was born on October 7, 1996, in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, where he lived until he was four when his family moved to East Whitburn in West Lothian. He descends from Scottish, Irish, and Italian origins. He is the fourth child of all his siblings. His mother conceiving him came as quite an astonishment to his family members as he was termed a bit like an “Immaculate Conception,” owing to the fact that his father had undergone a vasectomy. His interest in performances began after his performance aged four years in a show in France. At age nine, he started learning the guitar. It wasn’t long before he began songwriting and performing gigs while sneaking into pubs with assistance from his oldest brother.
Career
In 2014, Capaldi went on a three-show tour under the Hit the Road initiative organized by The Scottish Music Centre. He performed at Dumfries, Edinburgh, and Fort William, where he played together with Jacob, Rory Green, and Zoë Bestel. As an 18-year-old, his manager Ryan Walter heard about Capaldi through an iPhone recording which had been taken in his bedroom and uploaded to SoundCloud. Within just one day of first contacting Capaldi, Walter traveled all the way from America to Britain to listen to him play in person. In 2016, Capaldi graduated from New College Lanarkshire, Motherwell with an HND in Music.
Extended plays and increased recognition
He launched his career with an independent release of his single, “Bruises,” on March 31, 2017. In less than two weeks, it accumulated close to 28 million streams on Spotify globally, making him the quickest ever to accumulate more than 25 million streams as an unsigned artist. The song was re-released as a single in 2019 and peaked at No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart. After the success of the song, he was signed to the German arm of Universal Music Group under its Vertigo Berlin division. His recordings are marketed by Virgin EMI Records in the UK and Capitol Records in the United States. “Bruises,” along with “Lost on You” and “Fade,” appeared on his debut EP titled Bloom and are due for inclusion on his forthcoming album. He toured alongside English singer-songwriters Rag’n’Bone Man and Jake Bugg during the fall of 2017.
Personal life
Capaldi has always loved playing association football, and his favorite team is Celtic F.C., which is based in Glasgow. He and an actor named Peter Capaldi are second cousins once removed. Peter Capaldi starred in the music video of Lewis’s song “Someone You Loved.” Following his success, Capaldi began experiencing stress, performance anxiety, and nervous ticks, prompting him to seek medical advice. In September 2022, Capaldi announced that he was suffering from Tourette’s syndrome. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Capaldi moved back to the family home at Whitburn, Scotland, to record his second album. His documentary film “How I’m Feeling Now” premiered on Netflix in April 2023. Capaldi has dated Ellie MacDowall since June 2023 to August 2024.
Influences
While growing up, Capaldi was influenced by heavy metal groups like Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold, pop-punk groups like Blink-182 and Busted, rock groups such as Oasis, and indie rock groups like the View. Capaldi developed a fondness for “soulful pop music,” which he got from Paolo Nutini and Joe Cocker.
